The events
of July 16th to 22nd 1994, when the remnants of a fragmenting comet,
P/ Shoemaker-Levy 9, bombarded the
surface of Jupiter causing fireballs many times the size of our own planet,
were an abrupt wake-up call even for those
who were aware of them. The historical sciences generally, and archæology
in particular, have collectively painted
a picture of the past as if our planet ‘stands
alone in empty space’. Nothing could be further from
reality. Our
restless planet exists in a solar system that has experienced a very
dynamic history over the past 20 to 30
millennia, and it is only from this perspective that the true history
of human civilisation will ever be fully
understood. The Morien Institute
archive therefore contains relevant material from many disciplines

Archæological
discoveries are being made all over the world almost every day. Most
are on dry land, but more recently underwater also, on coastal shelves
that were above sea level during the last Ice Age – and for many millennia
before that. As a result, the Morien Institute
archive grows daily larger, and time does not permit us to
feature every news story that comes to our attention. At present, the
bulk of our archive is not yet
available to online, but other pages for earlier years are currently
being compiled. They will be
accessible in the coming weeks and months. Many vistors to this site
send us news
about archæological discoveries in their areas, for which we are very
grateful
