“Underworld”
– Graham Hancock “Graham Hancock risked his life in a series of daring scuba dives to investigate the ruins of underwater cities from the Mediterranean to the coast of Japan, and now offers us a compelling new explanation for the origin of civilisation as we know it in “Underworld”.
Much of the ancient world inherited by our ancestors now lies under water after melting ice caps flooded vast areas at the end of the last Ice Age. |
New
advances in geology and marine technology mean that the great archaeological
finds of this coming century will more than likely be found under the
oceans. It now looks highly likely that large populations of early humans
were obliterated from the historical record by this catastrophe, over
10,000 years ago. But who were these populations — pre-civilised hunter-gathers
or more sophisticated peoples altogether? Graham Hancock takes us on an
exciting new quest to find out some of the answers.”

“Voices of the Rocks”
Dr Robert M. Schoch
“The great 19th-century battle between catastrophists and uniformitarians seemed to end with the notion of global cataclysms being dismissed as a back door to the supernatural.
But the catastrophist theory has gradually become more and more plausible, so that now, less than a hundred years later, it is widely believed that mass extinctions are linked to meteor strikes. |
Geologist
Robert M. Schoch believes that if a large meteor or comet could extinguish
most of our planet’s complex life (just ask the
trilobites), then a smaller one could destroy a civilization, and
perhaps did. In “Voices of the Rocks”,
he tells us how it may have happened. Asked to investigate the Sphinx
at Giza, Schoch was troubled to find evidence of a much greater age than
the 4,500 years suggested by Egyptologists.
This
led him to examine the possibility of a lost civilization dating back
to at least 10,000 B.C. Looking at linguistic, geological, and archaeological
evidence from around the world, he proposes an outline of prehistory that
differs markedly from our received wisdom–after all, if the Lascaux cave
paintings really are star maps, then we’ve got a lot of catching up to
do.”

His chief thesis is that numerous ancient sites and monuments — the
pyramids of Mexico and Egypt, the ruins of Angkor Wat in Cambodia, the
monuments of Yonaguni in the Pacific, and the megaliths of Peru and Bolivia
— are situated in such a way, geodetically, that they point towards some
separate and uniform influence, some lost civilization or “invisible college”
of astronomer-priests. Whatever you think of Hancock’s ideas and theoretical
musings in archaeo-astronomy, “Heaven’s
Mirror” is a gorgeous book, thanks to the photography of Santha
Faiia. Lush, evocative photos of the monoliths on Easter Island and temples
deep in the Cambodian jungle are enough to set the mind to introspective
wandering.
Maybe,
just maybe, Hancock’s got it right after all.”

“In
this set of three videotapes, writer Graham Hancock traverses the world
and explains his controversial theory that an ancient civilization, highly
intelligent people who sailed the planet as early as 10,500 B.C., spread
advanced astronomical knowledge and built ancient observatories. Skeptics
may scoff, but Hancock earnestly points out similarities in giant stone
structures in the Egyptian desert and Cambodian jungles, and on Easter
Island and in Micronesia, he points out what he considers evidence of
an ancient society of seafarers.
His
ideas may seem utterly bizarre at first, but Hancock presents them in
an understated and good-natured manner, and he also makes clever use of
computer graphics and aerial photography to illustrate the startling similarities
in ancient structures found from the North Atlantic to the South Pacific.
At times the three documentaries overlap, and at times they seem like
one long program rather than three separate presentations.
But
throughout, Hancock raises some puzzling questions, and even if you don’t
buy his arguments, bolstered though they are by mathematical equations
and astronomical diagrams, the
“Quest for the Lost Civilization” is an entertaining mixture of
archaeology, astronomy, and speculation”.

“Do
undersea relics near Okinawa offer proof of a sophisticated civilization
during the last ice age? Archeologists have long believed that civilization
as we define it — intelligent, tool-making, monument building, social
humans — began about 5,000 years ago. But submerged beneath the waves
near the Japanese island of Yonaguni is evidence that may well overturn
that long-held theory.
A small but persuasive number of scholars and scientists have long thought
that “advanced” societies may have existed as long as 10,000 years ago.
Their theories, however well reasoned and defended, have been hamstrung
by a lack of evidence. But recent discoveries of man-made artifacts on
the Pacific seafloor may well prove to be the smoking gun that will propel
this alternative view of civilization to prominence.HISTORY’S
MYSTERIES travels to the site and plunges beneath the waves
to examine the discovery, and talks to the investigators who are trying
to unearth the secrets it holds.
The answers remain unknown, but the questions themselves may forever change
some of the most basic assumptions about our past.”
