Today we
didn’t managed to get out much earlier, but the SNAFUS with the notebook
computer were resolved and we managed to upload our first webpages with
some of the pictures we had shot so far. It was another bright, sunny
morning which we spent trying to sort them out, but the staff at the Internet
Cafe in Kirkwall, Orkney, were very supportive of all our efforts
and suggested as a solution that we use a simple analogue dial-up line
instead of their LAN. It worked first time, and we were all very grateful
to them …
Earlier
we had taken a look at some standing stones in the Deerness area, where we will
be going to observe the sunrise for the annular eclipse early on Saturday morning.
Our intended observation sites at the Ring of Brodgar and the Stones of Stenness
has proved impossible, being located as they are in a bowl with local horizons
higher than the event we wanted to observe …
The
weather was far less cloudy than it had been, and we began to realise that some
of us were getting rather sunburned – something we had not been expecting, so
it was a pleasant, and welcome, bonus after all the computer hassles. Below are
just a small sample of the photographs taken by the expedition team on Day Four
…
Visitors
wanting to find these sites on their own would be wise to get a copy of
the
Landranger Map No.6, which shows the location of mostl megalithic
sites on the Orkney Islands …
