The Morien Institute - skywatching through the ages

Today started

well, with the last four days images uploaded to the remote server. The

morning was cloudy and overcast, but the afternoon saw cloudless skies

with the promise of a good sunset and clear weather for the ‘annular

solar eclipse’ which will occur at sunrise tomorow, Saturday

May 31st 2003

We first

visited the Ring of Brookan, about a mile or two from the spectacular

megalithic circle at the Ring of Brodgar. Continuing northwards,

we took a look at the vast number of ‘stones’

that appear to be standing stones at first glance, but which have been

incorporated into fences around farming land. However, they almost all

have similar shapes to those standing stones recognised as ancient structures,

and everyone we asked who lived locally said they were ancient, but were

incorporated into the fences because they were located at ancient land

boundaries
