The fine
Orkney weather we’ve enjoyed over the past few days just could not hold
on long enough for any of the hundreds of skywatchers gathered at Orkney
to observe the ‘annular solar eclipse’.
The rain stopped just before dawn but the clouds hung around so we had
to abandon our observations to the weather once again …
However,
there were many fellow skywatchers gathered at a site set up for the ‘annular
solar eclipse’ by a local Orkney farmer, and at around
03:30 the ‘Ceilidh’ began with
local musicians helping to make the disappointment of the cloudy weather
into a memorable occasion for everyone …
We
intend to visit Maes Howe tomorrow morning, so please call back for some images
of this spectacular ancient chamber, whose original purpose no-one has definitively
ascertained. The light from the setting sun at the Winter Solstice shines directly
into the chamber, but we do not know if any acoustic properties might have been
built into it …
making the most of the bad weather, the keyboard player
at the Celidh is 84 years old – and still rockin’ …
we
will put up some more photos taken on this expedition in due course …
