The Morien Institute May 2003 Astro-archæology Expedition got underway on Sunday May 25th., 2003, and will culminate in observation of the ‘annular solar eclipse’ which will occur at sunrise on Saturday May 31st 2003.
Anyone is welcome to join us, but visitors wanting to find these sites on their own would be wise to get a copy of the Landranger Map No.6, which shows the location of most megalithic sites on the Orkney Islands.
The expedition team consists of Naveed Bhatti, Ichiro Suzuki, John Michael and Koreen Perkins. We made good time from Dornock to Scrabter to catch the ferry to Stromness in the Orkneys, and were delighted to pass right by the ‘Old Man of Hoy’ – a favourite place for climbers from all over the world
One of the first things we did was to ‘mark’ the cottage that was our ‘base’ for the next week using the Garmin GPS 12 which will be used to ‘mark’
any megalithic stones that are not marked on the O.S. maps. We have already seen several likely candidates on our way to South Ronaldsay.
